Have you ever woken up in the morning to cotton mouth? Many people have, and understand that it is no fun to wake up that way. What most people do not realize is that it could also be a potentially harmful way of waking up. Dry mouth is not good for you, especially your mouth. It allows more bacteria to thrive in your mouth since there is less saliva to wash the bacteria away.
This means that it is also going to allow more bacteria into your body as you begin to swallow those first few times in the morning, which could leave you with an upset stomach, or worse.
What Dry Mouth Does
Dry mouth stops your mouth from regenerating and remineralizing from saliva. Your saliva has one of the most important functions when it comes to having a healthy mouth. It rinses your mouth constantly, removing plaque, old tidbits of food, and bacteria. Plus, it keeps the tissues in your mouth moist, which is how they stay healthy. If you struggle with dry mouth, saliva is unable to do its job.
What Can Lead to Dry Mouth?
There are several causes of dry mouth. First, there is how you sleep. If you normally sleep on your back, your mouth may naturally fall open as you snore, leading to dry mouth. Genetics could be another cause. Third, you may be on medications that have dry mouth as a side-effect. Those who regularly consume alcohol could also struggle with dry mouth. No matter the cause, you need to treat the problem.
