Complex Tooth Extractions

Complex tooth extractions are performed on teeth that have yet to erupt above the gum line. Teeth that do not emerge out of the gum tissue like they are supposed to can be problematic. These teeth, also known as impacted teeth, may cause issues with crowding, infections, or diseased tissue. To avoid these problems, Dr. Susan Sharp may suggest an extraction. We may also recommend extraction for wisdom teeth—the third set of molars that usually erupt during the teenage years.

During a complex tooth extraction, we will make an incision in the gum tissue. Next, we will break the tooth into pieces, which makes it easier to separate from the underlying bone and connective ligaments. Once all the pieces are out, we will suture the incision.

Socket and Ridge Augmentation

Socket and Ridge Augmentation is a common dental procedure that typically follows a tooth extraction. This process helps recreate the natural contour of the gums and jaw that may have been lost as a result of a periodontal disease, surgical procedure or tooth extraction. For example, when a tooth is removed, an empty socket is left in the alveolar ridge bone (the bone that surrounds the roots of the teeth). In this case when the tooth is removed and the surrounding bone of the socket breaks, it is unable to heal and begins to deteriorate.

Dental Implants

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may benefit from dental implants. A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that we surgically embed into the jawbone. The implant serves as the root element of a dental crown. If multiple teeth are missing, then we place multiple implants to support a fixed bridge. Implants can also be used to better secure a removable denture.

Implant-supported restorations are the next best thing to your natural teeth. Your restoration will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Implants provide you with improved appearance, speech, comfort, oral health, and durability over other traditional restorations.
