Dental Do’s and Don’ts After Gum Graft Surgery

A gum graft surgery can involve a few different procedures. But depending on the method and pain reliever used, most patients can drive themselves home post-surgery. Your surgery may not necessitate an overnight stay. However, that doesn’t mean you can skip over your recovery period too. Gum grafting requires proper care after the procedure to ensure lasting results.
At Tucson Dental Implant Specialists, Dr. Cole and Dr. Sharp will help you understand the right steps to take after your gum graft surgery. However, there are a few things you should generally keep in mind. We have highlighted them below.

Avoid Exertion

Just because you can drive yourself home after surgery doesn’t mean you should go about your day as usual. Patients should get plenty of rest after this oral surgery. Limit your activity and avoid heavy exercise for the next few days.

Apply Ice

After your surgery, you should ice your face at regular intervals throughout the day. Cold compresses not only help control pain but also reduce swelling and prevent bleeding.

Stick to a Liquid Diet

Your gums will be quite sensitive after the surgery. Therefore, be prepared to make some changes to your dietary habits for a while. Generally, you need to take vitamin-rich and nutrient-dense foods to promote healing and ensure a quick recovery. For the first two days post-op, try to take nothing but liquids and soft foods. Fruit smoothies and well-blended soups can make a liquid diet delicious without missing out on the essential nutrients.

Don’t Consume Hot Foods or Drinks

Hot foods and drinks can not only increase the risk of scalding but also slow down healing. The same applies to spicy food items. So, try to avoid those as well.

Don’t Brush or Floss

You must avoid brushing or flossing in the surgical area until the specific time your periodontist instructs you to. Even when it’s safe to resume brushing, remember to do it with extra care. Do not put excessive pressure on the gums.

Maintain a Clean Mouth

Avoid rinsing your mouth for about 24 hours after the procedure. After that, you should rinse around four times a day with warm saltwater. It is best to rinse your mouth immediately after eating or drinking something. This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and ensures good oral hygiene.
