If you are considering dental implants, it is likely that you have experienced advanced gum disease. Experiencing advanced gum disease can wreak havoc not only on your gum’s health, but also your gum line. It is common to see people who have suffered from gum disease, lose part of their gums to the disease, and many may even feel that it is impossible to restore it back to its natural look and health.
However, it is possible to restore your smile to its natural look with the help of restorative gum surgery after receiving dental implants. The most common method that we use to restore gums is called a gum graft. In most cases, a gum graft is a sure way to restore the gums and make sure your dental implants are protected from infection down the road.
Gum Grafts and How They Work
A gum graft is a procedure where a small amount of your tissue will be relocated to areas of the gums that need repair. Typically, the tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth. During the procedure, we will make a small flap on the roof of your mouth and take tissue from beneath the flap. After the tissue is collected, we will stitch the flap back to the roof of your mouth. However, in some cases, this method may not be the best, and it may be necessary to take the tissue underneath the flap and part of the flap. After collecting the tissue, we will graft it onto your gum.
After receiving dental implants, it is still possible to become afflicted with gum disease. This is why it is important to repair the gums as well. Without a gum graft, it is likely bacteria will settle near the root of the tooth and cause decay and infection again.
