When we are treating you for gum disease, the process can take some time: depending on the severity of your gum disease, you could be looking at a treatment period as short as 10 to 14 days, or as long as a number of weeks. In some cases, the treatment will involve working with tooth roots that have been exposed.
As some of our patients know, exposed tooth roots can sometimes cause discomfort. This is especially true if the exposed part of the root comes into contact with foods or drinks that are especially hot or cold.
If you are undergoing gum disease treatment, there are a few things you can do in order to make the pain from the expose roots more manageable. By following these tips, you can help make the treatment easier on yourself.
Avoid Aggravating the Discomfort
It goes without saying that if doing a certain thing increases the pain, you should do your best to avoid it. Try to keep from eating or drinking foods and drinks that are too hot or cold. In addition, foods that are high in sugar content can sometimes add to your pain and should be avoided during the treatment.
If the feeling of air going over the roots causes you pain, try to breathe with your mouth closed as much as possible. This prevents cold air from moving into your mouth and across the roots of your teeth.
Consider Desensitizing Toothpaste
Sometimes, an over the counter toothpaste that desensitizes your teeth will be just the fix for you. We can recommend a number of products that you might consider, so ask us if you are thinking about using a desensitizing agent.
Keeping the pain to a minimum during the treatment will help make the process easier for you. Before you know it, the treatment will be over, and we will have your smile back in top shape.
